I want to use my own list of blocked domains or better yet have it automatically updated for example from here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Right now domain tagging does not allow this neither individual domains blocking. You might add new category to domains tagging that has all domains from current hosts file on above website.

I'm a huge fan of the hosts file too. I use Hostman at the moment but would love to shift the 80,000 or so blocked domains to my OpenDNS account.

Better yet, let you import to your black/white list a file, maybe hosts, csv, xml, xls, etc...

This would be just an amazing idea.

re "I use Hostman at the moment but would love to shift the 80,000 or so blocked domains to my OpenDNS account."

Seriously, what happens when your list grows from 80K... to more than a million hostname entries?

I don't block by hostname, because JUST my list of porn/adult hostnames is 1 million+ entries (and, really, I'm more concerned about blocking malware n adverts)

Whether your list resides with Hostman, or OpenDNS... consider how much time is required to parse such a HUGE list of blocklist entries.

What you're wishing for (your blacklist to reside, in memory, on OpenDNS servers) just isn't feasible. It doesn't scale; it can't accomodate OpenDNS' myriad users.

This is easy to do on a Windows machine, but I agree that's better to do it centrally. I put the mvps.org hostfile on my router's firewall (see http://dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=20346 for directions) last year and it's been great -- even machines without adblockers get similar filtering.

I would think moving these services to the WAN's DNS would be slower, so you should do it locally if at all possible ... but having this available for any hardware would be great, so you've got my vote!

I don't know about uploading "custom" hosts files. As all the different networks for 7,000,000 request per day might slow things down. But maybe mirror lists and have the ablility to select various lists. Personally I am a HostMan user. It's on all my machines. I currently have over 149,000 blocked on my pc via:

MVPS Hosts:

hpHosts:

Peter Lowe:

Bluetack:

Hosts File Project "Workstation":

For additional adult blocking you might try:

Hosts File Project "Adult":

There is another mega hosts file out of France. I forgot the address as I have deleted my bookmark. It's well over 500,000 addresses. I used it for about 2 weeks then I felt it was to slow. And took to much time to update. But it is good to have on the childeren's pcs. Later I'll check my sons to get the link.

It would definately be beneficial to add a simple Tick-Box option to "USE MVPS BLOCKING", from the list of domains here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

I used to use this hosts file myself until I started using OpenDNS, but I imagine OpenDNS could come into legal trouble as a major DNS server "blocking access to advertisers, for commercial profits".. But I suppose it's a user option, and just an alternative to using the hosts file anyway.

they are doing this advertise block, without any fear for legal issues, at http://www.fooldns.com

Exactly what I need! I was just about to suggest this feature but I voted up for a custom hosts file.

It will be great to configure only one hosts file instead on for each machine on a network.
