Timed blocking would allow the customer to set time periods they can block the websites/categories that they have chosen to block, or in some advanced options they would be able to choose time periods to block certain categories.
For example, they could block Myspace.com or the category that contains myspace.com (or all selected categories and sites) from 7am till 5pm, and anytime outside of that time frame, the site(s) would be allowed.

Sort of same basic feature on most Linksys routers, but the configurability could be immense on OpenDNS.
Being able to give specific sites specific time frames is a cool idea.
Is this what you mean?
http://ideabank.opendns.com/story.php?title=Domain_blocking_-_at_certain_times_of_the_day_only
good idea, for educational purpose it will be a good feature
Funny, I just sent support a request for that very thing, Time Restriction functionality..
Yes, time based management is extremely important for this filtering service.
many companies-org would allow different profile of content filtering on different days-hours. very important.
Suppose I want to limit the kids to one hour of cartoonnetwork.com per day but don't care what hour???
it would be really nice to have a timer go active once they log onto the page. however, the downside would be if they stayed connected to the site and left the room and the timer stayed active.
Would really like this idea. Based on time - block X, Y, Z website. Ideally global on my home network or just my children's PCs.
a great idea and actually the reason I came looking in the forum.
maybe have a set 'lunchtime' period as well where certain sites are unblocked for an hour whilst people are on their lunch break and before and after work so if people wantt o check their private email they can come in early or stay late, but so they're not sitting at their desk all day doing nothing. :o)
Yes, it will be a wonderfull idea. At each lunchtime I had to lock off msn
Great idea especially for those of us that have peak and off-peak accounts.

If you are using an Apple Airport device, you can configure timed access for the device with Airport Utility.
I agree whole-heartedly to this idea - could be time zone specific or based on UTC. Could be as simple as having two filter settings. One for normal time and the other for off-time.
This option is available in Websence and all other major filtering tools. I beleive openDNS should consider this.
good idea but can we include IP router address. Also, dlink router have set times you can shut down the wireless. I like the time per day be it an hour or two.
Yes, I like the idea of having one set of categories for "off time" and one set for "normal time". It will need some way of setting the time zone.

I would love to have timed blocking of my kids playing online games. They could have homework time and play time regulated to maintain balance. My work schedule is irregular, so I cannot always be around to block and unblock world of warcraft. We are currently on an honor system, and it works most of the time, but I wonder about times when I am at work.
absolutely great idea, now can you imagine that openDNS could keep track of each computer on LAN and allow or block as per total time use a web site or domain of the day or week or month. So a parent could say, this week only 4hr on the facebook or skype. I guess that would be too complicated to config for openDNS.

Again just adding my vote here. Would be really good to be able to do this. So it's a big Yes on Timed Blocking from me. Great Idea.
I think this is an excellent idea.
I'd previously toyed with running two routers , with each on a timeswitch. When I wanted to use OpenDNS to control what my kids were doing, I'd power up that router. Once they were in bed for the evening, then the other router would power up (using my ISP's DNS).
Having control over this via OpenDNS would be simply brilliant.

Yes this is a great idea. Each network's timezone should be based on it's IP address using IP Location lookup, and allow to set some nice schedules with associated Rules that can be applied to one or all networks.
That would be great.
and here i thought this was an origional idea that i had just a couple of minutes ago. actually sent a request....great idea!!!! would love to be able to have more control over kids net time.

Yes this is what a Corportae user migth intereseted in.. If you could ban things on working hour and after working hour they can open anything.. then before working hour on the next morning this feature can block those site again.. briliant!!

This is a much needed feature. Businesses generally want the ability to open a limited number of sites, for example Facebook, but only before and after or work (or maybe during lunch). It shouldn't be an 'open all' or 'close all'. The ideal situtation would be the anility to create custom groups of domains and then add times when these could be accessed - all other filtering rules still apply once this rule has been processed.
I am suprised this idea is not much higher on the list!! It was the first problem we hit when we started using OpenDNS filtering.
Almost the same idea is proposed here http://ideabank.opendns.com/story.php?title=Domain_blocking_-_at_certain_times_of_the_day_only#comments
Plz vote there!!

This would be an excellent idea, it would allow us to be able to adjust things for after hours. I would definitely want to be able to control this per category and per website.

You can do this already by changing your DNS forwarding to either use OpenDNS or not, depending on the time of day.
It's the first thing that came in my mind since using opendns. And that was yesterday.
hey, that was my idea! albeit a year too late
I'd love this. Would save so many arguments with my teenage son.
"The computer says no more internet tonight, not me!!!"
That's exactly what I'm searching for, I have a company and I want to block some pages on work hours and disable the block in lunch hours or at the end of the day.
It could be greater if I can block just for some users in my network.

If this gets done, this would probably be the only company that offer this for everyday people and businesses. 100% overdue PLEASE DO IT FOR US!!
This is exactly what I am looking for. This will allow me to enforce the agreed policy to take break from gaming and and social network at a certain time with my teenager. (For example 5 minute on the beginning of the hour take a break on game and social network. Make the game and social network not available between 1:00 am and 5:00 am).
This will really help my teenagers at home and reduce a lot of conflicts. I am willing to pay a premium for this service.
Fantastic Parental COntrol, could even be extended to categories as well
This is a good idea, but what if for example you want to block the amount of time your children use online games?
They could just use one game at the end of the time period and not refresh the page. I think the website won't be blocked until they refresh the page...
This is an idea that is long over due, and should put into practice.

Please add this to your product. But it needs a 7-day schedule. Putting this on a 7 day schedule, would allow parents to restrict facebook and runescape for the weekdays when homework needs to be the primary focus and allow it for days when the weekend arrives. I would ideally like two profiles and a schedule of when I switch between them. As I see it, if properly implemented, it could be switched by the same mechanism as the user making a change, it would just be pre-programmed.
Great idea. I would really help in keeping some household user from stating up pass their bedtime.

Great idea. Then I will block it when the kids have to be studying or sleeping instead of being on facebook.

This is the ONE feature that I would want. As a parent of a teenager, be need to put some restrictions on facebook, so it does not interfere with our son doing his homework. Yet, we don't want to eliminate it completely.
Ideally if we could say don't allow facebook or any social networking site between the hours of 5PM to 7PM, then allow allow it later that would be ideal.
I like the way Apple's AirPort utility does time restrictions, so if it could be similar to that. That would be ideal.
Again, if I could vote for this feature ten time I would, this is the ONE feature we need.
This would be most useful to improve school grades and even to limit myself so I get more sleep.
NETGEAR's implementation of openDNS does this via their WNR2000 wireless router which is supplied by virgin media.
Excellent idea!! In fact, I thought that OpenDNS would allow me to do this so that MySpace, Facebook and AOL could be blocked out to prevent my daughter from accessing these when she should be doing homework. Someone must do something to allow parents to control access to these dangerously time wasting sites.
Wold love this option. Agreed needs to be by computer.
It would be the same basic feature thats on Linksys routers (I have a WRT54G V6 Router and it has the feature but blocks or allows internet access) It would be a great feature to do timed blocking that would be simpler.
PLEASE add this functionality! my daughter is home schooled and having the ability to block sites during the school day would be greatly benificial.
Love the idea. This is one i would most certainly pay for. I have the router turn off the internet at 10:00pm but there is no way for it to restrict sites at specific times. 4 teen kids an i am getting tired of sounding like a broken record.
While not currently available with the core OpenDNS service, this is an option on Netgear routers that feature Live Parental Controls By OpenDNS. See http://forums.opendns.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=4931 for more information.

7am to 5pm where in the world?
It is a fine idea, and you could of course enter your time zone so it is known.
