Maybe this is a bit too tricky, but I'm compelled to get it out of my head and into writing.

This idea attacks this problem: there is a large volume of domain tags without votes, and some OpenDNS users may have an interest in having some tags voted on sooner than others.

Some kind of mediating interface could be made between the OpenDNS domain tagging and Amazon Mechanical Turk, allowing interested parties there to vote on domain tags in return for micropayments to them.

It would probably require creating a separate set of OpenDNS community accounts, each with a one-to-one link to an Amazon Mechanical Turk account, in order to track which MTurk users have voted on which tags.

Then a "fund" would be set up for each domain-tagging category, and as long as there are sufficient funds for a given category, HITs for it will be created on the Mechanical Turk site and the money will be paid out to each user fulfilling a HIT.

this idea has been kicked around the office. beyond the act of coding it, some care needs to be taken to avoid people gaming the system. for example, the domain is shown and five possibilities are given. zero through five of them may be an accurate tag. each domain would need to go through the system multiple times, each with different potential categories.

it is a great idea though and an applicable use of AWS mechanical turk.

You are wise to consider the risk of people gaming the system, and I think any good Mechanical Turk application needs to do this (in fact, I would be surprised if Amazon.com didn't already warn developers about this risk). It is analogous to the risk with distributed computing applications that use volunteers' PCs, where you run the risk that someone will reverse-engineer the data reporting protocol and submit bogus data in order to pump up their stats.

A classmate of one of my IT technicians made $100.00 in one class just by clicking through as fast as he could. Not a very good idea. Unfortunately, I think we already have the same problem on OpenDNS with users just clicking away voting "Yes" just so that they can be in the top 20.
