I, like many, don't like the way opendns handles invalid domains, namely redirecting them to search results. I simply wont use any DNS server which mucks with standard behavior this way. However, I am happy to pay for a reliable service, which opendns clearly is. I'd like to see an option to pay a monthly or yearly fee which would give me the option to disable the search/redirect behavior and make opendns behave like a proper dns server.

The fee could be any reasonable amount, though I'm sure you guys would be able to estimate revenue-per-account better than I can. I value correctness over expense, and I'm sure at least some others will agree.

If you have some sort of other filtering on your network, block "block.opendns.com". This keeps your current filtering solution with only 1 domain to block, the redirect page for OpenDNS blocked domains.

written by bill fumerola 628 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

settings -> typo corrections -> enable typo corrections (uncheck the box to disable typo corrections)

that will give you your desired behavior (NXDOMAIN will be returned instead of a redirection to the guide).

features that will not work with typo correction disabled: shortcuts, adult site blocking, custom image, custom message.

written by voyagerfan5761 627 days ago Rating: 5 | Rate Comment: + -

So getting rid of the guide page means disabling most of what makes OpenDNS more convenient. That's why a paid service level to disable the guide page *without* disabling all the other conveniences would be nice.

written by remyservices 403 days ago Rating: 1 | Rate Comment: + -

Is there anywhere that actually stats what will not work if we disable this option? Is it only adult site blocking that is disabled or all site blocking?

It seems that if this is all true it seems that 'typo corrections' should be renamed to 'Use our DNS servers with no extra features'

written by metalica732 627 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

Meh i think the guide is a great idea. Thats how OPENDNS makes money and as long as they are not as bad as DIGG with there adds i'm ok

written by crackerjackmack 627 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

OpenDNS clearly has a stable and scalable DNS structure in place. Even though I voted for this, the typo corrections do allow you to receive NXDOMAIN.

# host fakedddddomain.com 208.67.220.220

Using domain server:

Name: 208.67.220.220

Address: 208.67.220.220#53

Aliases:

Host fakedddddomain.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

written by ruscal 151 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

I unfortunatly got the same result as the OP.

X:\>nslookup fakedddddomain.com 208.67.220.220

Server: resolver2.opendns.com

Address: 208.67.220.220

Non-authoritative answer:

Name: fakedddddomain.com

Address: 208.69.36.132

I'd much rather have an NXDOMAIN response.

I really think OpenDNS is doing a great job and I will continue to use it this way. However, would support them if they chose to offer this paid option.

written by coreyb 626 days ago Rating: 3 | Rate Comment: + -

I don't mind it, however, if I could have it redirect to a user defined error page that was cross branded, I would pay for that. In fact, I would probably pay to have it placed on my consulting clients systems as well.

As long as opendns does not change its ads, i think its great the way it is.

Things that would destroy opendns would be using ANY non-text based ads. Basically popups, color ads, graphic ads, banners, etc all would DESTROY opendns. 3 or 4 text only ads makes bandwith usage increase by like .000000001% so its totally ok with me.

Only thing that is a little annoying is that some ads are for it services, a huge number of people who setup opendns are it specialists setting it up for customers, giving your customers ads of possible competition kinda bothers me, but......

written by sparko 586 days ago Rating: 1 | Rate Comment: + -

I'd vote YES to paid accounts...

...but not in the context of "paid, to prevent mucking with the results".

Paid or not, the Guide (with its text ads) should stay, IMO.

As a LAN user, running an extra (350watt+) box to serve as a hardware firewall isn't an appealing prospect.

A new generation of firewall/HIPS security suite apps is on the horizon... but I'm not a fan of such bloatware.

Each of these existing apps provides a PARTIAL solution:

DNSKong

PeerGuardian

TreewalkDNS

What I would gladly pay for (pay to support, pay to subscribe, whatever) and what I hope to see OpenDNS develop is a client-side app which, in addition to polling OpenDNS servers for lookups:

~ serves as a local DNS caching proxy

~ enables opt-in subscription (importing) of blacklists

~ provides ability to export/edit/import bulk lists

~ blocklist parsing supports (er, ignores) in-line commenting (source and reason each entry appears within the list)

~ enables netmask/netrange/IP-based blocking, in addition to hostname blocking

written by billysprings 148 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

Your TreewalkDNS was something new I hadn't seen - thx

DNSRedirector was a nice find too. The more I look at it, the more it has the kinds of things we're looking for.

Howwever, I'd much rather pay openDNS for a service offering with them. These r old posts, so they obviously find it more profitable not to offer that. :(

written by Anthony 583 days ago Rating: 4 | Rate Comment: + -

For a paid account, let the administrator choose where to redirect to: from a list of search engines or a custom url with a replacement parameter for the search term.

written by facad 577 days ago Rating: 6 | Rate Comment: + -

Yes Paid with choice of destination would be great. After redirecting my DNS the first thing I was looking for was a pay option to remove the sponsors and allow more changing of the redirect page, to make it fit with the design of the Schools Media

written by phillip.dixon 557 days ago Rating: 1 | Rate Comment: + -

I vote yes to paid solution.

What I dislike is the sponsored links on the pages of blocked sites etc. I'd gladly pay to have these removed and have a simple search page.

written by tresk 552 days ago Rating: 2 | Rate Comment: + -

I belive sponsored links arent so profitable that couldn't be replaced by a small fee.

written by Ray 541 days ago Rating: 2 | Rate Comment: + -

I to like many others would much prefer to pay a yearly fee (within reason) for the search/ads to go away.

I like the idea of a paid version. Keep the free version, but allow people to pay $X/year to avoid the ads.

Do you think $10 is enough?

written by aslezakk 224 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

...and the redirects... just has a dns timeout (as it happens when you do not use opendns).

why a paid account. just make it an option

Uhmmm... OPENdns, ring a bell? its OPEN... Don't think people will "Pay" for the services that OPENdns provide as a COMMUNITY

written by Miles 143 days ago Rating: 1 | Rate Comment: + -

OPEN does not mean FREE...

written by popennell 438 days ago Rating: 1 | Rate Comment: + -

@alin0s

Simple solution: OPENdns needs to spinoff into a new market:

CLOSEDns

:)

written by corporateresearch 396 days ago Rating: 5 | Rate Comment: + -

as stupid as it sounds the company i'm at is using opendns but they were resistant to using it becuase it was free. Businesses seem to have fears that free == cheap or bad. I think OpenDNS could probabbly make some good $$$$ by advertising a pay option even if you treat it as a "donation" or something.

written by valewis 363 days ago Rating: 2 | Rate Comment: + -

I would like to see a paid option that would have a custom page with no adverts, OR a page that can be more configured with minimal ads at the side or the bottom of the page.

written by adouglas 361 days ago Rating: 2 | Rate Comment: + -

I agree with having a paid option, but don't expect the ads to go away too cheaply. OpenDNS makes 20k a day off of those little text ads.

I want the adult blocking but I don't want the redirects on mis typed domains nor when I type a search into the address bar.

What would be ideal is a PRO account. Let me pay so that these two things can be turned off. I really have no issue with the ad's in the BLOCKED pages.

It would be nice if OpenDNS could host my DNS for my own servers and provide dDNS too. That would let me get all of my DNS needs from one company. I could justify in my budget paying for these three services easier together than on their own.

My thoughts.

written by bourqud 284 days ago Rating: 2 | Rate Comment: + -

I can't use OpenDNS in our entreprise because of the adds. We would gladly pay 1 000$/year just to have a manage, stable, DNS forwarder filtering malware sites

written by joshhyles 282 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

This has been fixed/enabled, whatever.... go into settings and Disable OpenDNS Proxy. This was one of my biggest complains as I used firefox and would often type in a single name and would get to where i wanted because it was the first google result and FF forwards you there autoamtically. Anyways, I just disabled it and my single word URL works again! :-)

I thought the whole idea of Opendns is a free service that anyone can use???

written by jrsit 214 days ago Rating: 3 | Rate Comment: + -

My company is ready to pay right now. The ability to add a custom redirect page, or just remove the sponsored links would be enough.

written by breeneng 198 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

Actually, I find the redirecting to a search engine is a great idea and always thought that's how DNS servers should always behave, because if you mistype something, there should be an easy way to find what you were looking for in the first place.

written by ruscal 151 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

no offense, but that is what search engines with their ever so easy to remember names are for. Google, Yahoo, even the new Bing. You can go there easy enough. But for me (as a consultant and programmer) having an invalid domain resolve to 208.69.36.132 (or any other OpenDNS IP) causes problems with a couple of programs that check the validity of a hostname before continuing. I don't want to be obtrusive (or potentially attack like) and ping or attempt to open a port on any remote host, just confirm that the name my client inputs at runtime is indeed valid by having it resolve to a legal IP. I don't even mind the ads or the block page, its just resolving invalid host names that cause me problems.

written by ianonline 186 days ago Rating: 3 | Rate Comment: + -

it would be fun to have more control when it comes to customizing opendns.

I think the idea is to expand their offerings with a "value added" service offering, you pay to remove (as I understand the OP) the search page (and as other have suggested, ads on all OpenDNS hosted pages).

But I do not believe that anyone is suggesting OpenDNS abandon their free service, only that they offer some way for us to remove these search pages and/or advertisements.

That being said, I'd love it if the neutered pages were also free, but I do understand that those impressions are where OpenDNS generates a substantial revenue.....

Hey. Why do you talk heavily like that? Why do you call OpenDNS muck? It is not suitable just a bit.

written by alansnyder2000 52 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

As a home user, I would be willing to pay something like $5 per month for $50 per year for an advanced feature like "timed blocking", (i.e. facebook), and at the same time get ride of the ads.

Just something to consider.
