Hi there,

I just made a category suggestion named sth. like "Multi-Level-Marketing" or maybe "Scams" as another user suggested. There is plenty of this annoying, potentially dangerous stuff out there, especially everything within "MARKETING" !! Or "Business"! Or better: "web business millionaire through affiliate marketing", I think this sums up the worst case! :D

I absolutely hate it, it get's on my nerves, this "retire and become millionare through home-business". Sample sites that I just saw recently and got me to write this:

http://wealthyasyouwant.com/ http://www.thehomebusinesspeople.com/ http://www.notmlm.com/

Bah!

Mamazitta:

While I have no love for Ponzi schemers, the idea to intentionally miscategorize sites is ill advised. It dilutes any trust people might have in OpenDns and discourages it's use.

I don't expect it to be prefect - I do expect it not to be intentionally sabotaged.

So are you telling me I cannot become a self-made millionaire in 20 months?!?

The problem I see with this category is, some companies would not consider themselves multi-level-marketing, or, it would be highly debatable whether that really is a ponzi scheme/scam. Seems like it would open up a can of worms of deciding the 'legitimacy' of a company's business. I don't think OpenDNS wants to get into that business...

I agree with mfinzel.

I would recommend that people use www.ripoffreport.com to check on sites if you suspect a business may be illegitimate.

@mfinzel: It is not about "legitimacy", but about facts! Is this site about "affiliate marketing" / MLM or is it not? They won't/can't deny this, if they shout it out outloud, do they? My path of thought is in this way different of yours: No one said shopping or social networks are bad or illegal, still they've got their own category! :P Of course this stuff is not "illegal" and you can actually make three or four bucks, but that's not the issue. It is just, they are MLM and that's enough for most people, they just don't want it! (understandably)

@pepe0001: I don't want to "check on them" (even more time waste!), but just have them blocked!

Um... sounds like you just need to focus more on work and not on network marketing websites. I think people rarely get 'tricked' into going to a site and I know of none that are complete scams yielding you nothing and you giving them a bunch of money. The ladder would be ones own fault.

Of course they are not "illegal" and you can actually make three or four bucks, but that's not the issue! ;)

It is just, yeah, they are "MLM"!

Because, no one said shopping or social networks are bad or illegal, still they've got their own category! :P

And of course one should just focus on work. ;)

But it is more that I somehow stumbled across this stuff as I searched sth. else, I don't know this now any more.

There must be a balance between too many categories and too few. Is it possible to add sub categories, allowing refined tagging and refined OpenDNS configuration?

I dislike tagging "Adware" and "advertising" when what I want to indicate is "BEWARE - fraudster".

For a home network broad categories are okay, but for large networks, broad categories need justifying where content is being blocked.

However, a category blocking fraudsters and scammers (including those claiming that their product is the only one that works and all the competition are rubbish), would seem to be a pretty good improvement, albeit a refinement not needed by home users.

So, turn on Adware, but turn off subcategory Fraudsters, turn on Advertising, but off Scammers (including ludicrous numbers of anti spyware software purveyors.) ... more precise categories would be useful.

I agree, an MLM category would be useful. At the same token, an SEO category would be interesting.

@galaxie: So right! Thanks.
