The US government determined that all federal agencies must support the IPv6 protocol up to the end of 2008, but the date predicted by this model where the IPv4 unallocated address pool will be exhausted is 08-Jul-2012.
Even so, OpenDNS must implement IPv6 as soon as possible, while it still has time to make improvement on its filtering technology.
Despite what the prediction says, IPv6 is already employed, e.g. for transmitting TV using digital signals.
From Solaris in 2000, to Vista in 2007, IPv6 is supported and enabled by default.
Once OpenDNS started to support IPv6, its users will be the very first to feel any performance improvement, using IPv4, while it still exists, and at the same time enjoying the new features of the last OS.

Opendns has no server that is reachable via IPv6 though. The DNS request from your host system will be going via IPv4 and OPENDNS will respond via IPv4. When an AAAA record is returned, your host will connect via IPv6.

I think they are going for a dual stacked resolver. In that instead of just IPv4 addresses to put in for dns resolution, have a couple IPv6 addressess as well.

IPv6 is on OpenDNS's roadmap for 2008. stay tuned.

Cant wait! Dual stacked and ready to go. Just say the word when and the addresses and you got yourself a tester.

It's 2009. Nearly 2010. When are we going to get IPv6 addresses for the OpenDNS servers? )-:
I'm right here next to mindlesstux waiting and ready to help any way I can.
*googled upon here*
any news for IPv6 support ? :)
Hmm... I would like some updates too. I run Windows XP with IPv6 enabled on it. I also have a IPv6 tunnel with the sixxs tunnel broker so I do have connectivity. At this time ipv6 sites are resolving perfectly fine however I do not see opendns having ipv6 addresses themselves. This is going to become more and more important as time goes on.
P.S. - opendns.com does not have a AAAA record of their own yet. The dns server (as someone already mentioned) is neutral on the actual records and does store AAAA records for other websites including ipv6.google.com.

Making IPv6 available is a good idea. The entire world moving to IPv6 is a really good idea.
Enabling IPv6 by default, anywhere, is a bad idea, until IPv4 is gone. Or until software and hardware vendors (and users) account for it properly. There are a variety of security vulnerabilities in systems where IPv6 is enabled; it is not properly configured by default.
Sure, Open DNS could go IPv6-ready, or make it an available protocol. But especially for individual home users, why bother with IPv6 at all until a healthy proportion of sites is using IPv6 only?
I'm all for the internet going IPv6, but what is the interest here for the average user? What is the current benefit of IPv6 addresses and protocol for a DNS server?
Your average user won't use IPv6, however the average Internet user doesn't care about OpenDNS as the domain name resolver provided by her/his ISP is good enough, thank you very much. So why do average users use OpenDNS? Because there are power users who recommend it. And those power users might run IPv6.
Should you enable IPv6 on your default name servers? Maybe not, as there might be bugs, etc. Sooner or later, however, you will have to provide IPv6 support. So why not start early, let some users test the system for you, get your staff to train on the new technology, and at the same time make a name in the community for your IPv6 expertise? All you would have to do is to provide an additional DNS server that is accessible over IPv6. Only people who know what they are doing would actually configure their system to use this server. No impact on the normal user.
Does OpenDNS plan to offer an IPv6 DNS server, and if so, when would that service (for testing purposes) be available?

No, IPv6 has always 'worked.' OpenDNS has always cached AAAA records (IPv6 DNS entries).
We are asking for an IPv6 endpoint for the OpenDNS system, instead of the IPv4 address 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
So we are in the middle of 2009, whats up with IPv6. Home users are already getting it, avm (largest home router manufacturer in germany) recently announced ipv6-enabled firmware for their popular devices. Would be nice to use dns via ipv6.
For the first time an ISP has built a IPv6 DSL line. IPv6 is really coming. OPENDNS, please wake up.
At this point a dual-stack user is doning his DNS via IPv4 and the connection after that via IPv6. So, it is still not possible to do IPv6-only surfing. Not that this is realistic yet.

psssh...IPv6 is like the metric system. We need to wait for old people to die before it'll happen.

Stats for IPv6 usage would be great. Would love to see mine compared to everyone on the OpenDNS system.

What a bunch of turtles!
How come IPv6/Teredo support isn't implemented yet?
It's October 2009! Do you know where your IPv4 address space is?
Netflix has published IPv6 addresses. Now is the time to take the dive and get IPv6 support working. It won't be long before Comcast (2010) and other large ISPs roll out IPv6 support and the average end-user will be using this. Get the kinks out now. Get some IPv6-accessable DNS hosts that can do lookups and recursion, as well as respond to clients.

Windows 7 has IPv6 enabled by default too!
I wonder if OpenDNS will have resolver service for IPv6 addresses.

Ipv6 is automatically supported because DNS is netural to which ip version numuber you are using. the AAAA record is for your ipv6 number. where the A record is for the ipv4 number.
