It was mentioned at the forum that OpenDNS uses four IP addresses for its service, even though it normally only mentions two. I would like to have the option of having two different configurations, one for the standard 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 address set, another for the alternate 208.67.222.220 and 208.67.220.222 set.
This would allow us to use OpenDNS from the same network but have different options on different computers. For example, at a home network, parents could set up the router with the standard addresses, but their own computer with the alternate. Their children's computers would then use the default for that network with perhaps some heavy filtering. But the parents computers would just use the phishing protection but otherwise be free to browse wherever they want.
Similarly, a business could have different settings for the employees and owners, a school for students and teachers, an Internet caffe for customers and staff.

Interesting idea! In the mean time, you would have to use multiple WAN IP addresses, two networks, and two different settings... it is not always feasible to have two WAN IPs, so if this were possible, it would be cool.
It may be easier to do it based on authentication, like a username and password pair?

DNS messages do not contain a username and password. However the dashboard does. So, in the dashboard we could have two different setups, depending on which server we query.
Cool idea, but we're pushing OpenDNS to the non-free zone...so I'll withhold my vote for now.

How is it pushing it to the non-free zone? OpenDNS already uses these four IP addresses for their DNS servers, so this should not incur additional cost, other than some programming changes, but they do seem to be doing that regularly.

I tend to agree. It seems to me that if you need that level of customization, especially from a business perspective, it's time to start looking for a full filtering solution.
I put something similar in the "accountless filtering" idea but it is probably more appropriate here.
How about just giving us 2 addresses that are subject to account rules and 2 that are completely unblocked. I'm running a parents network (unblocked using the local ISPs DNS) and Kids network (blocked using OpenDNS DNS). Works pretty good but I like the reliability and anti-phishing of OpenDNS.

Two settings for DNS can be solved by DCHP passing setting for two different VLANS. I don't think this is a DNS issue, rather than knowing what your hardware is capable of ( VLAN or not), and having a DHCP server to be able to work in that environment.
I agree.
No DDNS configuration nightmares
No client side software that can be easily hacked
No problem with any platform, any router
A pragmatic solution alas browsesafe.com but better implemented with the resourses of OpenDNS
No. We need the two IP addresses for redundancy and reliability.
If you want to run separate networks in your business or home, then use static IPs and assign each IP to different OpenDNS privileges in the dashboard.
I love this. I've been struggling with this one for a while. Trying to think how I can explain to my church how they can setup content filtering for their kids but... their kids are smarter they they are and will uninstall the ddnsupdater. The only thing I could think to do is to purchase a vps with bind and proxy all of the dns lookups through that and then setup a filtering profile for my dns server.
They simply need to use policies and/or not allow standard users to be able to install or remove software.

I think this is a great idea as well. I was going to post almost the same request. However, I wasn't going to say how.
I'd just let OpenDNS work that out.
The real request IMO is:
Can we have a way to have multiple DNS groups from the same source IP, each with their own filter rules.

I like the concept but I'm afraid that using a different DNS doesn't mean there will be different filtering rule....

In addition to this, I would like to also be able to set different filtering rules for different User Accounts on the same computer. I have two children of different ages who use the same computer -- the youngest has a limited account with no password, the older has full admin privileges and a password. There are categories I wish to allow for the older child but block for the younger.
This is a great idea. If OpenDNS needs two sets of primary and secondary IP addresses, then just create a new set of DNS addresses, so that dual filtering rules could be applied.

I had this exact same idea. So I agree.
