A Firefox Extension or Toolbar (for other browsers) that would allow a logged-in OpenDNS.com user to submit sites to the Domain Tagging database.

For example, if I were to visit www.google.com and it was not already in the database, I would be able to select an option "Add site: 'www.google.com' to the OpenDNS Database?" then include the appropriate category (also pulled from the OpenDNS Database which would be "Search Engine".

This would eliminate the need to manually submit sites to the database and allow web surfers to quickly and accurately add sites to the Domain Tagging database.

Also if it has been submitted and not voted on. Allow a vote on the toolbar for that site.

Good idea!

written by daleflannery 1910 days ago Rating: 8 | Rate Comment: + -

It should allow setting domain tag as above, allow voting on submitted tags as above, display current tags applicable for the domain, allow adding to my whitelist, and to my blacklist (now there's a good idea).

Some of this functionality could also be in an IE toolbar button for Internet Explorer users.

I know what I am about to mention is discussed in detail in other idea submissions, BUT this toolbar extension would be an convenient place to put a button to switch my windows DNS servers to (for example) my ISP servers and then back to OpenDNS for the purpose of reviewing blocked sites before possible white listing.

I have a great idea for this, all voting and such all from the simplicity of your browser (no need to go to opendns.com other then to login)

Nice! Sometimes the simple ideas are the best :-)

Also list which categories the domain is listed in. I could live with a toolbar that took up an entire row in IE or FF to list all these, plus have a combo-box to place sites into a category.

As an interim step, you might find this bookmarklet useful

javascript:document.location.href='http://domain.opendns.com/'+document.domain

Make sure it's all on the same line!

I've submitted this exact idea here before. Maybe you worded it better than me.

It's a great idea!

lol same here!!! :)rn

Not only could the toolbar allow users to submit domains, it could display the applicable category (or categories) for the current domain. For example, even if you don't block phishing or pornography sites, if you went to a site that fit one of those categories, the toolbar could tell you.

The toolbar could also fill a role I've been asking for for months--an easy way to change blocked categories and other options. Something easier than logging into OpenDNS directly and whitelisting/blacklisting a domain or changing blocked categories.

NO TOOLBAR

Seriously, everyone has there own single function toolbar they want you to use. That kind of thing leads to the ridiculous situation where one person has 12 different toolbars in one browser window.

I would support a ui extension for Firefox that would ad an unobtrusive icon or button though.

written by jesipr 1706 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

What about both options?

I'd love to see a panel for Opera.

Bad idea if it was a tagging extension, it would disturb me very often.

I agrea with barrymart! Individual toolbars take up too much valuable viewing space. Fine on my large screen at home ... but on my 8.5" laptop, not for me.

written by blogmasterpg 1742 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

That's the best 'bank' idea i ever read

written by deizel 1731 days ago Rating: 2 | Rate Comment: + -

To the people complaining about toolbars:

1. Right click the Firefox menu bar

2. Go to 'Customize...'

3. Drag the most used buttons from your favourite toolbar to another toolbar (eg. the main Firefox 'Navigation Toolbar')

Note: there is an 'Add New Toolbar' option if you wish to create another one for this purpose

4. Press the 'Done' button

5. Profit.

Don't know if anyone is using the Firefox add-in "Ubiquity" (http://labs.mozilla.com/2008/08/introducing-ubiquity/)

If you are then you can use the Ubiquity script found here:

What's with the "extension craze" (i blame firefox ^^)?

Even a simple javascript bookmarklet would suffice ;)

Great idea imho. And it would be even better if it allows for other operations: flagging for review, network admin snapshot etc.

written by tigertails 1646 days ago Rating: 2 | Rate Comment: + -

Could make a simple thing like StumbleUpon, takes you to a random website, you tag it, and go onto another one..

written by i39 1639 days ago Rating: 2 | Rate Comment: + -

I think this is a good idea for network and systems administrators and the like. I've proposed a simpler alternative for folks with less sophisticated needs: http://ideabank.opendns.com/story.php?title=Domain_Tagging_Browser_Bookmarklet-1

written by Travis Cunningham 1606 days ago Rating: 2 | Rate Comment: + -

Hey if you guys don't make an addon, I'll make it because I know how to create one. Seriously we've been waiting for a while.

written by tcblack 1529 days ago Rating: 2 | Rate Comment: + -

By all means, please do. I'm tired of waiting and I *don't* know how to write my own.

Great idea! Really needed!

written by Ravindran 1442 days ago Rating: 1 | Rate Comment: + -

Apart from extension/toolbar, provide bookmarklet also. This will allow us to use it on any browser.

written by itsallme 1421 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

this idea would be better served as a bookmarklet

written by pjoshua5000 1417 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

I think it should also have a "temporary disable filtering for this sit" so you can go to the sit and view it to verified the catalogs and to see if any new category show be added.

On the web page you see a box at the top (maybe overlapping the page, with an option to hide) with the current categories, then you vote on them (yes or no), then you can add a category if you want

Also you can see how many times the domain has been add, and the number of times each category was voted on.

And you could choose to add it to your white or black list (or see if it is current on your black or white list or currently block if you have "temporary disable filtering for this sit"

But for this to work you need to make sure that each session you are asked your password and user name so that it is not easy for someone to by past the filter with "temporary disable filtering for this sit" Meaning you can't have "remember my password" option because someone can gain access to your account if you are not careful.

This toolbar would allow you to vote as you surf, and you can get reminders if this is a new domain when a page is loaded, or to vote on it , or you could choose to bypass the filter temporary if it being block.

(since you, the administrator, the one with an opendns account, are the only one that can use this toolbar, it doesn't matter if you can temporary disable the current page, because you could always add it to your white list, but that is a hassle)

I hope my idea, or understanding on the toolbar idea is helpful.

To get domain voted on you have to make it easier, and this would making it very easy. Becasue it only takes a second to vote, well maybe a few seconds.

written by bseaman 1367 days ago Rating: 1 | Rate Comment: + -

It would be great if the toolbar showed you the current domain tags for voting.

written by kandyass 1340 days ago Rating: 1 | Rate Comment: + -

I came here to post a similar idea, which is to block/unblock a domain from the toolbar/extension. Inconspicuous vote yes or no buttons would be nice for the site being visited would be nice too.

written by Daniel Gifford STAFF 1287 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

We currently have a Domain Tagging bookmarklet that makes tagging and voting even easier. With one click, go straight to the domain detail page for the site you're on. Drag this link (javascript:document.location.href='http://domain.opendns.com/'+document.domain) to your browser menu bar.

written by greendayguy 1256 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

Here is an improved bookmarklet which opens the Domain Tagging page in a new, smaller window on top of the curent one. To use this, add a bookmark to your browser with the following text in place of a normal URL:

javascript:window.open("http://domain.opendns.com/"+document.domain+"#maincontent",%20"OpenDNS_Tagging",%20"menubar=no,location=no,directories=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,status=no,width=740,height=400");%20void%200;

Copy that WHOLE PARAGRAPH, not just the web address that's linked, and paste it into a bookmark. If you don't like the horizontal scrollbar on that bookmarklet, try this one instead, it's bit wider:

javascript:window.open("http://domain.opendns.com/"+document.domain+"#maincontent",%20"OpenDNS_Tagging",%20"menubar=no,location=no,directories=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,status=no,width=950,height=400");%20void%200;

Again, copy the WHOLE PARAGRAPH above, not just the link.

To the OpenDNS Staff: you really ought to make a small, simple page for domain tagging/flagging that can be used as a bookmarklet in the way I have shown above. The current page it uses is just too bulky for a bookmarklet.

written by Xenozof 1158 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

I have wrote the bookmarklet as an firefox extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/zh-TW/firefox/addon/96333

I know it may not be helpful but it is useful for someone who do not want to make it as a bookmark.

written by mikec-odns 1157 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

brianfok/Xenozof - I tried the add-on but when trying to vote on the domain that it displays, one's opendns login doesn't seem to be recognized. The issue may be resolved if the add-on invokes using 'https' instead of 'http'. A manual invocation of the same url that the add-on used but with 'https' seems to recognize ones opendns login properly.

written by Xenozof 1154 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

Have you sign in the opendns in the same browser before using the add-on? I want more details as I cannot get the same situation.

written by amarin 813 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate Comment: + -

Great Idea! Please make it open-sourced!

If I am browsing the internet, I would like to easily judge on "Is this an appropriate tag?" by just seeing in a toolbar that this site is waiting for (my) OpenDNS categorization feedback. I would (if I feel to do so) vote on it by a simple click and go on with my browsing session without really having been interrupted in my browsing event. But as long as I first have to enter the opendns-website, even having to type in the URL somewhere for finding IF it is already submitted, then I just cannot help much to improve the OpenDNS database, due to lack of time.rnWhat I want to say: OpenDNS lives to certain extend on the feedback from the users. So why don“t incorporate/motivate the users (like me) to give more feedback by providing a much more comfortable (very quick to use) feedback frontend?rnrn(Unfortunately I can not vote on this idea and do not know why. Maybe I missed that such feature in the meantime aalready exists? Then it would be offered insufficiently prominent so that I could find it also I was searching for it.)
