What I would like to see is a checkbox for exceptions. The biggest problem we have run into with all the new categories is that almost all sites are getting multiple tags. We have about 50% of the categories checked for blocking but we are blocking way more than that. The reason is that some sites which we allow "news" are getting blocked because they also fall into the "television" category. I would like to see a checkbox that will override the block rules and allow any sites that are not blocked. If you have "television" blocked and "news" allowed, any site that was tagged as "news" will always be allowed despite it also being tagged as "television".
This is a major cause of aggravation for me and will continue to get worse once the domain tagging really takes root. More and more people are inventing new ways to tag sites with multiple tags and causing frustrations with management. This is not a complaint about multiple tags, just a complaint about how OpenDNS handles domain filtering of sites WITH multiple tags...

For your solution to work easily an idea I submitted as "Quick Addition of a Blocked Domain to the Whitlist should be implemented.

I think you should be able to whitelist by category rather than just by specific domain. So if you blacklist by category "television" and whitelist by category "news" then news sites such as bbc.co.uk are allowed through.

So what you would need is an "advanced category filtering" page with all the blocks and allows listed in order of priority (blocks first by default). You could then move the news category up above television to give it priority.

Or another way to go about it--once you switch your account to "advanced mode," what if the categories were always displayed in priority order? This would cut down on the number of screens to deal with.

This is what the whitelist was made for. Click on the settings tab in the dashboard and look for settings on the left.
"Whitelist
A whitelist is a list of domains that will never be blocked on your network regardless of the content filtering categories you've turned on. For example, if you are blocking adult-themed sites but really want to visit celebrity gossip site tmz.com, you can add it to the whitelist below and get all the benefits of adult site blocking but still get your Paris Hilton fix."
