Opendns works great for static IP's but not so great for dynamic. How about two more dns servers that give a basic domain filtering out of the box?

Why doesn't it work well for dynamic?

Try this support article: http://www.opendns.com/support/article/109

It tells you how to set up OpenDNS for a dynamic IP.

I understand what he is getting at. My dad's church has this DSL connection, and I am convinced the WAN IP changes twice a day. I have yet to find a stable (computer to run a)dynamic update client. If there were OpenDNS servers that blocked all adult out of the box (like it does phishing) I would use it there.

You could get your church a Linksys router and replace it's firmware, put ddclient on it - solvered, and as an added bonus you can block all other dns ports.

New Netgear router instead. WNR2000, I think it is?

Yeah, thought of that, except that he's in GA and I'm in CA. Maybe if I move...

This is seriously necessary. The parental filtering is almost worthless if it is tied to software running on the computer. You might as well have an adult filter toolbar on your browser (easily avoided by using another browser).

Until a wide variety of routers have the dynamic dns available off the shelf, an alternate set of DNS IP addresses that are already filtered can stand in.

I would love this at least it would be basic filtering. I current multiple laptop computers (Dial up at home), Wireless AP anywhere else. I been working with OpenDNS to get Multiple Dynamic IP networks and multiple OpenDNS Services with DNS-O-Matic on my account and update independently using labels so the filter rules will follow the machine but so far no luck.

But then there will be arguing about which categories will be the defaulted ones...

My suggestions would be phishing, pornography, tasteless, sexuality, nudity, gambling and drugs. These _I_ think might be the majority of reasons that noob (ie unlikely to be able to configure an account) parents / teachers / employers might try out opendns.

You should also be aware that many people may not want to register an account which then identifies them by their IP for privacy reasons. Not that they have a concern about OpenDNS privacy policy, they just choose to keep it all private from everybody including OpenDNS etc.

I think this would be widely well received, with churches, employer groups, K12 districts, parents groups, family lobby groups etc all promoting the changing of computer and router dns lookups to these new IP's. Maybe OD won't be able to handle all the new demand :-)

Question: How will OpenDNS make any money from this?

Answer: Advertising on the block pages, as with the current setup

This is a great idea and one that would be cheap to implement.

As an addition (or alternative) to this, I would ask there there be a couple of DNS server addresses that are not tied to your openDNS account (linked to your IP). I set up a separate network with a router that uses openDNS to block sites for the kids. On another router I have the adult network that is completely unblocked. On the adult router I have to use my ISPs DNS servers which are not the most reliable. I would love to have an all opendns solution.

Seems like a good, simple solution to the problem of dynamic IP addresses for non-technical folks. I've recommended OpenDNS to a number of parents, but I'm not sure how many will understand the dynamic IP issue. Setting up DNS servers for one of the three "Popular Groupings" on the categories page makes the most sense to me. This would give you "Adult Content", "Bandwidth Hogs", and "Parent / School" as your categories for DNS servers.

Nice idea.

Why just two DNS addresses? Why not 8 or 10, giving users the opportunity to select multiple levels of blocking without having to set up an account! Also, it would allow you to set each of the kids' computers to age-appropriate levels.

If OpenDNS decides to implement this, please set up a voting area so we can decide as a community on the ten levels of blocking.

I think purchasing a Router that can update your OpenDNS dynamic Entry would be best for this. I saw someone Mention a DDclient. I'm not sure if OpenDNS is using a Standard for dynamic updating, but that would be a preferred solution.

You are asking OpenDNS to register more IP addresses which can cost more money, and there are a limited number of them available.

If your serious about filtering then you should probably be looking at a solution such as IpCop running URL Filter.

That way you can block adult content that affects only certain pages on a domain.

When you visit YouTube you don't want it blocked because it has adult material on it, but using a URL Filter it can block the "verify age" page to block adult videos.

This is still a great idea!

My dynamic IP just got me (again) in the filter of some other OpenDNS-User who has somehow reserved a bigger address space in the dynamic IP range of my provider, and therefore I can NOT use the dynamic IP client or the dashboard of OpenDNS to associate my current public IP address with my OpenDNS-account. Only option for me is to reset my internet connection and hope to get a "free" IP-address next time (= NO solution).

Btw that's "great" for privacy, because that other OpenDNS-user can just log every DNS request coming from my network (besides filtering stuff I actually need or not filtering what I don't like) in the time it takes me to find out I'm in his space. It's completely impractical to open support tickets every time that happens (and it happens regularly).

A server for each basic filtering level would be the best solution for me (no-filtering, low filtering, ...). No software to install, no account to configure, just enter the IP address and the system is setup for the rest of my life, and even on any network I join (as long as the network admin doesn't override my settings on the router).

I found that www.safefromsites.com offers this type of accountless blocking from $2 per month for home use. Go on OpenDNS, do it!

I also think this is a great idea.

If you're running multiple networks under one username like I am, its a pain to make sure they all update properly.

This would make it a LOT easier.

I think its a great idea. dynamic IP update running on PCs directly ( win/mac, what about Linux?), aren't a solution for home networks setup with a router in between.

why is this marked done?

does it mean we can use different filtering without any account?

There is a parental control version of OpenDNS which just blocks adult sites.
